March's challenge
Mama poured out Francie's coffee and put the milk in it even though she knew the child wouldn't drink it. Francie loved the smell of coffee and the way it was hot. As she ate...she kept one hand curved above the cup enjoying it's warmth. From time to time she'd smell the bitter sweetness of it. That was better than drinking it. At the end of the meal it went down the sink.
As Francie's aunts observed the waste her mother explained-
"Francie is entitled to one cup each meal like the rest. If it makes her feel better to throw it away rather than to drink it-- alright."
A Tree Grows In Brooklyn by Betty Smith

I have been enjoying the book A Tree Grows In Brooklyn for the first time. I love this piece above- the understanding respect of her mother and the little girl Francie soaking up simple things in her life.
Today I was pouring herbal tea for myself. Kate pleaded- "Can I have some!?" I knew she wouldn't drink it-- and I was about to say "no"...and then I thought of Francie and her mother. Kate tried it without honey and then with honey. She did take two sips- and held her face above it and smelled it's sweetness. I think I will serve it to all of us more often...even if they don't drink it, a tea party is always fun.
Words can add so much meaning to photographs- lyrics to music, poetry, novels, children's literature...or your own words. March's challenge is to link a photograph to words. I have a stack of ideas I hope to create this coming month...from songs and books. I hope you will join me! It will be inspiring...and you just might take a few photographs you wouldn't have taken otherwise. I wouldn't have taken this picture of Kate at the kitchen counter with a tea cup today.

This is such a sweet picture to go with a sweet story!
I haven't ever participated in the monthly challenge, but I have really tried to have the confidence to!!! I will try AGAIN! This will be tough, since I don't read much! A challenge both ways!!!
I love the reflection captured in the table. just beautiful!
Ironically, I just did this today.

AWESOME PIC CARIN!!! I find that I'm always like, "that's the best one ever" "THAT'S the best one ever...." etc. I haven't read A tree Grows in Brooklyn since high school...I don't even remember it! I'm totally gonna go get it now!
oh carin, that is beautiful. just like kate. i love what you wrote here.
This is so beautiful! The words and picture. I never read the book but saw the movie years ago when I'd go home after school and sit around watching AMC waiting for everyone else to get home. Great idea!
I love this challenge (an excuse to read more and take more pictures is just what I need!!)! What you wrote above the picture made it so meaningful - love it!
You're amazing!!
Brilliant -- I'm going to be carrying my camera around with me for the next few weeks, so we'll see what happens!
Love the ambiance of this photo and love that book!
That was a moving thought! It's seems pretty easy, but at the same time very hard. I do actually try to do this instead of just reading the topic of the month.
Carin I love this idea... I think I will have to be creative and try it this month. LOVE A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, I struggled to get into it, but by the end I just loved it. Love that feeling of shutting a book and thinking, oh that was enjoyable.
Here's mine. Thanks Carin! http://mikeanniemillerfamily.blogspot.com/2009/03/whaaaatttzzzzz-daaaattttt.html
Well, I finally got around to it, although it didn't quite turn out as I had imagined. I think I will try this one again sometime.
